senior capstone

the birds outside are singing,

There is a calm in feeling that nothing in life seems to truly end, we are left with impressions constantly fading but never fully healing. And it is within this calmness that the desire to explore the value of our subjective life experience and the intimacy of our interconnectivity grows.

Through elements of storytelling, reflection and conversation I aim to develop an understanding on how our human connection allows us to develop a healthier relationship with our material consumption, can this idea of interconnectivity and sentimental value eventually aid in enriching the lifecycle of our products.

“ Narrative “

The presence of human connection has always been of interest to me. The ability that we have to learn from each individual perspective, relationships that can develop from any circumstance, and the impact that human hands have on every aspect of our lives.

Through the impact of this connection is where we develop a vast majority of our sentiment and where the process of my capstone began.

The items I have been given or passed down or that just remind me of a time and a place are the items that I would consider of the highest value. Knowing their story and lifecycle and the way it has made its way into my hands creates such a unique relationship. A relationship that I feel can be mindfully cultivated. Whether that be in the transparency of the process, the story narrated by the creatives behind it, or the role these garments allow us to play, the relationships we build with our products is what really determines their longevity.

In order to implement this level of sentimental value within my collection I utilized imagery, trims, patches and fabric gathered from my mothers family farm. Exploring the time capsule that can exist in the details of our clothing.

The Birds Outside Are Singing exists in hopes of cultivating conversation around the relationships we develop both with humans and material objects while simultaneously symbolizing my overwhelming gratitude for the people and places that have so heavily impacted my life.

Thank you.
